» History
Breakaway was founded in Melbourne in 1976 by Gordon Black. Gordon was and still is a fanatical Rugby follower. He played first grade Rugby Union until he was 36 years old, playing against the likes of South Africa and the All Blacks. He played in the Breakaway position and hence the company name.
In the beginning the majority of staff were actively involved or had a background in Rugby. Breakaway has sponsored numerous Fun Runs including it’s own Breakaway Fun Run and has for a number of years, been involved with the sponsoring of yachts, participating in major nautical races and in more recent years with a selection of Golf clubs.
Breakaway has come from the humble beginnings of a one man band to now 30 years later employing a team close to 100 who all share the clothing passion. In 1998 we moved into a state of the art head office and warehouse to handle the increased demands for our brands.
Breakaway merchandise was first retailed in small local stores, but quickly gained access to national retailers such as Myer (since 1984) and David Jones (since 1987). We currently supply over 2,000 retailers in Australia and New Zealand.
